Any device running PL4Y can be the player. We just think an iPad on the rack looks the part.

You bring the hardware.
We'll bring the software.

Plug in whatever you've got. A dongle DAC, a desktop stack, a tube amp feeding floorstanders. If your iPad can play through it, PL4Y can drive it. It just works. Nothing to install, nothing to calibrate. Pick a song and you're ready to rock.

We cannot promise optimal performance on a gramophone, however.

Questions

Does the iPhone stream audio to the iPad?

No. The iPad plays Apple Music itself and sends it straight to your DAC. Only commands and playback status cross the network.

Does PL4Y play lossless audio?

PL4Y uses Apple Music's own player on the iPad, so you get what Apple Music delivers to that device, including Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless with a DAC that supports them. Now Playing shows the active audio variant and the output sample rate as reported by the iPad.

What do I need?

An iPhone and an iPad on iOS and iPadOS 26 or later, both signed in to the same Apple Music account with Sync Library on, an Apple Music subscription, and a USB-C DAC or other audio output on the iPad. Both devices need to be on a home Wi-Fi network that lets devices see each other; guest networks often block this.

Does PL4Y control volume?

No. Leave the iPad at full volume and use the knob on your DAC or amplifier. With a fixed-output DAC this also keeps the signal unattenuated.

Does PL4Y need an account or a server?

No. Your devices find each other on your local network and talk over encrypted connections. There's no PL4Y account and no PL4Y server.
