# PL4Y

> PL4Y is an iPhone and iPad app (iOS and iPadOS 26 or later) that controls Apple Music playback on another Apple device over your local network. The usual setup: your iPhone is the remote, and an iPad wired to your hi-fi through a USB-C DAC plays the music. Made by UniversityGO LLC. Tagline: "You bring the hardware. We'll bring the software."

## What it does

- The iPad plays Apple Music itself, using Apple Music's own player, and sends audio straight to the DAC. The iPhone never relays audio; only commands and playback status cross the network. There is no AirPlay or Bluetooth hop in the audio path.
- Lossless: you get what Apple Music delivers to the playback device, including Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless with a capable DAC. Now Playing shows the active Apple Music audio variant and the output sample rate reported by the playback device.
- Apple Music integration: both devices use the same Apple Music account with Sync Library on, so the remote browses For You, the library and the full Apple Music catalog locally, with artwork. Play, Play Next, Play After, shuffle, and an editable Up Next queue (reorder, remove).
- Playback control: play, pause, previous/next, seeking, swipe to change songs, works while the iPad is locked. Move playback to another device with the song, queue and position intact.
- Setup: choose the iPad on the iPhone, confirm the same six-digit number on both screens, tap Allow and Matches. Pairing is saved and reconnects automatically.
- Privacy: local network only, encrypted connections, no PL4Y account, no PL4Y server.

## Requirements

- iPhone and iPad on iOS / iPadOS 26 or later
- The same Apple Music account on both, Sync Library on, and an Apple Music subscription
- A USB-C DAC or other audio output on the playback iPad
- A home Wi-Fi network that allows devices to discover each other (guest networks often block this)

## Limits

- No volume control: leave the iPad at full volume and use the DAC or amplifier's volume knob.
- iPadOS may suspend the app after a long idle pause; reopening it reconnects.
